講題： Epistemic Iteration in Mathematical Neuroscience

摘要： In this paper, I will present a case study from mathematical neuroscience, and analyze it with the method of activity-based analysis, i.e., by focusing on roles of the relevant scientific activities, agents, criteria of success, goals, and other relevant factors. The goal is to use this method to identify the relevant epistemic patterns embodied by the scientific practices in the case study. I then employ Chang’s notion of epistemic iteration to articulate the identified epistemic patterns further. Finally, I will argue that using the notion of epistemic iteration to understand the case study is better than using notions of scientific explanation.
