摘要:
In recent years, increasing attention has been devoted to the problem of the lack of diversity in academic philosophy. The discussion, however, mainly focused on the absence of gender, racial, and ethnic diversity. In comparison to these cases, the absence of linguistic diversity within the discipline have received relatively little attention. This paper is an attempt to address the related issues, including how the absence of linguistic diversity shapes the current status of the discipline.
English today is the undisputed lingua franca of scholarly exchange, and academic philosophy is no exception. While having English as lingua franca provides a public good to all users in the global philosophical community through communication, the non-native English scholars are structurally at a professional disadvantage in the global market of ideas. Since the proficiency in a foreign language costs time and money, doing philosophy in English imposes an extra burden on non-native English scholars. Unlike their native English colleagues, they must make an extra effort to philosophize and to disseminate their work to reach a global readership. As a result, the linguistic disadvantage faced by non-native English scholars leaves them underrepresented on the global scene. I argue that it is detrimental to the philosophical enterprise in general. For a change, we should create a more inclusive environment for scholars with different linguistic backgrounds, and some places to start include having more international participation and multilingual collaboration in journals and conferences.
